Girls’ Golf Grows
Despite the infancy of the girls' golf program, which is only in its third official year, head coach Alec LeBris is confident that his full roster of ten golfers will allow the team to have a fun, successful, and competitive season. With their larger roster, this will be the first time in the program’s history that the team will be able to participate in a complete match, which is a testament to the commitment of the St. Luke’s female golfers, who have truly pioneered the creation of the program. Coach LeBris has been there from the beginning and has cultivated a team culture that supports both new and veteran golfers alike, with work ethic and camaraderie taking priority over all else.
Coffey Shines in Florida
Along with filling out the team’s roster, participating in preseason play in Florida helped set the team on the right course, literally and figuratively, heading into league play. LeBris mentioned, “Florida offered our girls 72 holes of play over four very nice and challenging courses.” One of the trip attendees was senior Kathleen Coffey, ‘24, who LeBris says “can compete with anyone.” Coffey ‘24 proved she worked hard in the off-season, managing several impressive scores despite challenging Florida weather conditions. Coffey’s veteran play is sure to help the team secure some victories throughout the season, as she will fill the number one spot on the roster.
Experienced Captain Sets The Tone
Second-year captain Abby Malkin ‘25 can also be credited for the burgeoning success of the girls' golf program. As LeBris mentioned, “Abby brings organization and a real sense of team-first camaraderie. I rely on captains to do the "normal stuff" act as leaders, help with scoring disputes, and introduce our lineup before teeing off, but I also rely on Abby to handle most of the day-to-day logistics such as communicating with the AD about uniform distribution, handling the team messaging, relaying coaching decisions to the players, etc.” Having a captain with such a wide range of skills on and off the course is extremely valuable, and Malkin’s leadership will certainly help to motivate some of the younger players, such as Annabel Drapkin ‘26, who LeBris says improved tremendously over the summer and is ready to contribute significantly this season.
Staying Calm In The Storm
LeBris wants “Gritty golfers who grind” and preaches to his players the value of mental strength in a game like golf. If the team can stay strong when the pressure is high, they will earn some solid victories this season. Having lost several close matches last season, Coffey, Drapkin, Malkin, and the rest of the Varsity Girls’ Golf team are ready to put Storm Golf on the map.
